While it remains to be seen if the trend will continue, or if as in the past, human smugglers and asylum claimants will "adjust" to the new system and figure out ways to defeat the barriers imposed, it is a very telling sign that claims have dropped dramatically although there is no impediment to anyone making an initial claim. It confirms what we have long suspected: the economic incentives and the ability of bogus claimants to stretch the process under the old system were the primary drivers of refugee claims. Time will tell if the trend will continue. Hopefully, this will free resources to process the applications of those who apply in economic categories.
