IMMIGRATION AND EMPLOYMENT FOR NEWCOMERS

Today's Globe and Mail article below is interesting but does not address one important point: why should employers go to such lengths to accommodate applicants at a time when labour is abundant due to the recession? Do we need even more costly regulation to choke employers and force them to accommodate? If we were to apply free market principles, then employers will hire those who are good for their bottom line.Other than ensuring non-discriminatory practices, the government should get out of the way and let employers hire those who are best for the business. Moreover, employers should have a much greater role in immigration policies, to ensure that only immigrants who are employable and productive for the economy come to our shores. There is no point in allowing people to come in if they cannot find a private sector job.
